February 1st - 5th

Hello Room 17 class!  It is great to be back in the classroom and seeing everyone in person. We had a chance to welcome back one student from the HUB class who has rejoined us in the classroom. Everyone was very welcoming to her and made sure she felt included in the classroom activities this week.

In Writing, we have focused on making a Recipe of Kindness that we have created from scratch. In our recipes, we are making sure to include our list of ingredients and all the steps involved in giving and sharing our kindness ideas with others. The students are in the process of typing up their good copies of their recipes in their Google Drive documents.

In Math, we have continued to explore 2 digit addition and subtraction and the various strategies we can use in order to show our understandings of the process of these two operations. Students also continued to show their understanding of representing a number like 100 in many different ways from number sentences to skip counting.  We continue to also build picture and bar graphs as ways to display the information we have collected from our class.

In Science, we are looking at Hot and Cold temperatures and exploring how we can heat not only our houses, but how our school is heated with its boiler.  We also looked at how long it takes to melt snow in the classroom and the effect of wind on the outside temperature as our week at school has been very cold!

In Social Studies, we continue to explore the community of Saskatoon and the role that the Ukrainian people and their culture has had when they moved to Canada to settle and farm in and around Saskatoon. They brought language, dance, food, music and their songs and stories along with them to share with others to make sure that their culture and traditions are not lost to younger generations.

Next week, there will be no homework as it is a very short week with Teacher's Convention on Thursday and Friday and Family Day the following Monday. We will be handing out the Valentine's cards that many students brought in this week next Wednesday and then the students can look forward to a very long weekend moving forward! Have a great weekend, stay warm and see you in your formal uniforms next Monday!
