December 6th to 10th

Hello! The holidays are almost upon us as we have one more week before the break! Students continue to work hard in the classroom and I think that everybody is ready for a bit of relaxation time and time to spend with family and friends!

In Mathematics, we have spent time creating bar graphs related to the food donations that the students have graciously been bringing in to the school for the Calgary Food Bank. We have also finished our still life pictures about a number of the items brought in and have come to conclusion that there are a lot of cylinders (soup / veggie cans) and a number of rectangular prisms ( cereal and pasta boxes).

In writing, the students were working on a walking story about an imaginary friend they may have had in their lives or still have in their lives! We focused on adding descriptive details, similes and Triple Scoop words to make our friends come alive in the mind of the reader!

In Science, the students were hard at work as Rock Detectives and were given a number of rock samples that they had to perform various experiments on to determine if they were igneous, sedimentary or metamorphic rock samples. Some of the tests made it clear what type of rocks they had and they had to justify why they said a rock was one of the three types. And don't be afraid to ask your child which is the rock that is able to float on water!

In Social Studies, we have been comparing the students' own celebrations with those of other countries to look for similarities and differences we could find with food, music, language, dance and the time of year in which the celebrations occur. Students learned that no matter where the celebration takes place, it is a great opportunity for family and friends to get together and remember parts of their past.

As we get ready to close out 2021, I want to thank each and every student and parent for a great start to this grade three school year. The students continue to challenge themselves each and every day and want to increase their understanding of the concepts to the best of their ability. I will continue to encourage this approach into the new year in anticipation of moving onto grade 4 and a new school in the future. Have a wonderful rest of your weekend and see everyone either in their fancy Christmas clothes or their formal uniforms!

November 29th - December 3rd

Welcome to December! November seemed to fly by this school year and we are entering the last few weeks before winter break begins!

This week in Mathematics, we have been working on identifying 3D objects in the classroom and also outside in nature. The students have been working on naming the faces, vertices, and edges found in each 3D object and also in connection with art we have created a still life drawing of the many items that the class has collected and will be donating to the Calgary Food Bank. Students had to create a picture that shows the various items found in the foreground, middle ground and background of the picture they are creating. We talked about layering our objects and adding details to the cans and boxes of food before us.

In Writing, the students had created their own monster pictures and then wrote their own walking stories to describe the monster. Next week we will look at the writing and try to match it up with our pictures that are on display. Students tried to infuse as many Triple Scoop words as they can and also include some similes in describing their individual monsters.

In Science, we continue to explore rocks and minerals and discussed the effects of water and wind on rocks. We looked at the composition of the earth with its various layers, the crust, the mantle, outer and inner core. Students also enjoy finding rock samples in and around the school and sharing them in our rock garden at the back of the classroom. Next we will be looking at how rocks are classified and identify what type of rock they may be.

In Social Studies, we have continued to look at the various areas that make up the culture of the countries we study. Areas like language, music, celebrations, food, dance and art help to define a group of people and next week we will be comparing it with our own cultural celebrations that make up our own connections to our communities and look for similarities and differences we can see.

So two more full weeks of classes to go before the break... I hope students can continue to show the focus and determination to do their best each and every day leading up to vacation time. The grade 3's are an amazing group that is capable of incredible things. Enjoy the rest of your Sunday and see you in formal uniforms on Monday morning!

November 22nd - 25th

Hello to all of you from Room 5! It was another busy week and as the weather has started to cool off, please ensure that your child comes to school with a warm jacket, boots, mitts and also a toque.  We will probably be going on a nature walk in the community in the coming week and we want to ensure the students will be comfortable during our walk.

A big thank you to all the parents who were able to connect with me either on Thursday night or Friday during the day to talk about your child's progress so far this year in Grade 3. The students are working hard in the classroom and it was fantastic to share this news with all the parents who were able to attend.

In Mathematics, we continue to explore 3D objects and being able to identify the various faces, bases, vertices and edges that make up the various objects. Students also had a chance to practice drawing out a cube, cylinder, cone, pyramid and rectangular prism to see what they look like in their 3 dimensional shapes. We continue to practice using numbers in increasing and decreasing patterns and explain the pattern rules, whether they are counting on (increasing) or counting back (decreasing).

In Writing, students have created their own monster drawings and now are working on creating a walking story to describe their monsters and their various features or personality. Students took time to brainstorm ideas about their monster's face, body and other interesting features. We will be working on typing out our good copies next week.

In Science, we have started to introduce our next unit on Rocks and Minerals and their various properties. We have talked about minerals and what they are. We have also learned that there are three types of rocks - igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks and how they are formed and shaped over the years.

In Social Studies, we are now focused on culture of the various countries and have so far explored the celebrations, foods, language and music and dance of Peru, Tunisia and also India. As part of this upcoming week of homework, the students will be exploring their own family's culture and then comparing it with some of the other countries we have been looking at.

Hope you have a wonderful Sunday and see all of you on Monday in formal uniforms. Please also remember that your child requires a pair of indoor gym shoes as our Physical Education program has moved indoors.

November 15th - 19th

Hello there! Hope you are having a great weekend room 5 students and parents!

Last week was full of excitement as students had the opportunity to participate in some Hip Hop dance classes during Physical Education times. This culminated with the students getting a chance to perform their dance as a whole class on Friday. It was great to see the students come out of their comfort zones and show off their many dance moves!

In Social Studies, we have begun to look at the cultural aspects of each country we study and we started by looking at Peru and its languages, music, art, food and folktales. The students are quickly learning how each country is unique and tries to celebrate it culture in many different ways.

In Science, we are wrapping up our unit on Animal Life Cycles and had another virtual "visit" from the Bow River Fish Hatchery to talk about adaptations that rainbow trout have made to be able to survive in the waters found in and around Alberta. Students even had some fun trying to think of creative adaptations they would add to the trout in order to keep them from being eaten by predators or dealing with things like muddy waters!

In Mathematics, we continue to look at expressing numbers various ways and students were tasked with using Base Ten blocks to create a picture and then show that number in expanded form, written form, addition sentences and also in other Base Ten block pictures. There were some very creative pictures that emerged from the students' imaginations.

In Writing, we have focused on using similes in our walking stories and students worked on creating and describing an alien that had recently landed on Planet Earth. Some creative creatures emerged with many different characteristics and body parts to be described!

Next week, a reminder that there will be Parent Teacher Conferences on Thursday night and there is no school on Friday as Parent Teacher Conferences continue. Please remember to wear formal uniforms on Monday and we will see everyone bright and early on Monday morning!  Enjoy the rest of the weekend.

November 8th - 10th

Hello Room 5 students and parents! Last week was a very short week for us with only three days of school! I want to thank the students for their hard work during this time and also a big thank you to the grade 2 classes for creating a very moving Remembrance Day virtual assembly that was shared with all the school on Wednesday. It makes us realized how lucky we are to live in a country that respects diversity and has created many rights and freedoms that we get each and every day here in Canada.

In Mathematics, we have started to look at 3D objects and we had a scavenger hunt in the classroom as students had to identify a variety of 3D objects such as spheres, cubes, rectangular prisms, cones and cylinders. The students found many rectangular prisms, but we struggled to find many spheres (though we did find some tennis balls on the bottom of our chair legs!).

In Science, we were finishing off our animal riddles where the students had to provide clues as to what type of animal it was and then draw a thumb print picture on the page below so the other students could guess their animals. Next week we are taking part in another virtual field trip to the Bow River Fish Hatchery to learn about the adaptations that rainbow trout have made to survive in and around Alberta.

In Writing, we focused on sharing our ideas of What Peace Means to Me to coincide with Remembrance Day this Thursday. We brainstormed the many ways that our quality of life has been effected by those brave soldiers who fought for the rights and freedoms we currently enjoy in Canada and what that means for peace in our present time.

In Social Studies, we looked at the landforms of Ukraine, it position in the world and what resources they are able to use to produce various types of products that are either used by people in the country or exported to other countries to use. We also spent some time focused on hearing the activities that went on in a number of our students' households in order to celebrate the Indian celebration of Diwali.

Next week, we will be having a Hip Hop dance residency in place for our Physical Education classes and it is important that students have proper gym shoes that they can use as we have moved inside for our PE classes. Also a reminder to wear formal uniforms on Monday and that homework is due this Friday for the homework #9. Thank you and have a wonderful Sunday!

November 1st - 5th

Hello Room 5! I hope you are having a wonderful weekend. Last week was our first full week in a long time so it was great to accomplish so much during these days.

In Science, we had a virtual field trip opportunity to the Bow Habitat Fish Hatchery where we learned about the life cycle of the rainbow trout. The students learned about the four stages in their life cycle, how long each one lasts and then how the fish hatchery works.  We have also been looking at creating our own What Animal Am I riddles about various types of animals.

In Social Studies, the students looked into the landscape of Ukraine and its two main regions - the mountains and the steppe plains region. We also had a chance to create our own ragolis in honour of the Indian Celebration of Diwali. It was great to have some first hand experts in our class who could share about the festival of lights and the meaning behind it.

In Mathematics, students still keep working on number sense and being able to add and subtract larger numbers. We are also exploring both increasing and decreasing number patterns by 3's, 4's, 5's, 10's, 25's and 100's.  Students start to see the patterns that emerge and build up their confidence in working on number patterns either way.

In Writing, we have been completing our descriptive pieces on our Mysterious / Spooky houses that we created the week before. Students worked hard to create a written story that both captures the attention of the reader and creates a clear picture too!

A reminder that we need to wear formal uniforms on Monday, but also on Wednesday when we recognize Remembrance Day which is on the 11th of November. Also please ensure the students remember to bring their library books back on Wednesday so that they can exchange them for new books.  Thanks and see you all tomorrow!

Last week of October

Hello room 5 students and parents! Thank you for another busy and productive week in the classroom. We had a chance to go on a nature walk on Thursday afternoon and took the opportunity to sketch the many types of 2D and 3D shapes we saw in nature and also those that make up structures we saw along the way. Also we celebrated on Friday with our Halloween activities and showed off our costumes to the rest of the school via Google Meet.

In Mathematics, students were working on creating a bar graph based on their houses that they constructed out of various types of 2D shapes drawn on the paper. Students are also working on decreasing number patterns and being able to explain the pattern rule that goes with the pattern. Students are still working to represent numbers and using a variety of strategies to add numbers together.

In writing, we are using our 6 Senses (including feelings) to write about our experiences as we enter into our Spooky or Mysterious houses that we had drawn earlier in the week. We used a variety of sentence starters and tried to vary how we began each of our sentences to draw the reader into our writing.

In Science, we looked at how various animals care for their young. With mammals and some birds, the caregiving time is a lot longer than with some animals that just lay eggs and leave. We also look at how animals have to adapt to their environments in order to survive.

In Social Studies, we are exploring the landscape of Peru and what they use the land and water for in their daily lives. Each country we study has unique features to it and they can effect the quality of life for the people who live in that country.

I hope you have a safe and enjoyable Halloween if you are choosing to go out tonight. Remember to wear your formal uniform for Monday and if parents didn't know, our class has won free ice cream for the whole class for always having our formal uniforms on for each Monday since the start of the school year!

October 19th - 22nd

Where has October gone? It seems like this month has just flown by and we are close to the end of the month next week!

Students had the opportunity to participate in Adventure Running this week at school. Students learned the basics the first day in the school playground and then had a chance to travel to a close by park in the community and put their mapping reading skills into practice. It was a lot of fun to watch them carefully read their maps with their partners and then race off to figure out the various words they could spell out using the letters on the flags they found throughout the park.

In Mathematics, students continue to try out various strategies in order to find the sums of 2 and 3 digit addition sentences. They were also asked to create an increasing movement pattern with a partner while the rest of the class tried to guess how their pattern had changed. Students are also being asked to represent numbers using a variety of methods and then explain what their thinking was in expressing their answer.

In Writing, we brainstormed various ways to use our 6 Senses while taking a Fall walk. Students were asked to use vivid language in order for the reader to get a clear picture of what they say, hear, tasted, felt and smelled during their fall walks.

In Science, we have explored the three different classifications of animals based on what they eat. We talked about carnivores, herbivores and omnivores and how they get their energy to live. Students also started to explore how various animals care for their young with different animals either leaving their young right away whereas some care for them for quite a while before letting them go out on their own.

In Social Studies, we have created a brochure to highlight the landforms found in the country of India. Students had to create a map that showed the 4 regions that make up India, talk about how long it takes to get there by plane and describe some of the features that make up the landscape of India.

A reminder that Monday is Photo Retake for students and parents need to email me that they would like their child to get a retake done on this day. Next week, we hope to go as a class on a Community Walk to use our senses to observe how the season of fall is all around us. Students will also be excited to know that on Friday, we will be having our Halloween celebrations and Virtual Halloween parade of the costumes that students have chosen to wear. Students need to wear their costumes to school on Friday and there are no weapons that are part of costumes allowed at school. Students are invited to bring a special treat for themselves, but please do not send any treats for other students in the class.

Have a wonderful weekend and see everyone on Monday morning in their formal uniforms!

October 12th - 15th

Welcome to this week's blog. I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend with their families.

This has been a busy week in the classroom. In mathematics we have focused on representing three digit numbers using the standard form, written form, expanded form, Base Ten blocks, addition and subtraction sentences to show our understanding. Students haven also been exploring increasing or growing patterns and the importance of being specific if you are writing out the pattern rules. We have looked at patterns with shapes, numbers and recently, movement patterns that increase. Next week, the students will be sharing their movement patterns that they created with their partners with the rest of the class.

In Writing, we are looking at using our 6 Senses (including feelings) to write about what we might experience on a fall walk. The students were brainstorming the various sights, sounds, activities and feelings we have during this season of autumn.

In Science, the students continued to explore the classifications of animals while looking at the characteristics of reptiles and amphibians. Students also tried their hand at creating What Animal Am I riddles to share with their classmates by giving them clues as to what specific type of animal were they talking about. There were so very interesting creatures shared over the past couple of days!

In Social Studies, students have been taking their understandings of land, the climate and resources founds in the country of India. Students have been creating their own brochures to share their information with others, including the regions found in the country, how long it takes to get there from Calgary and the resources that can be found or grown in the country.

In Art, we are looking at creating art pieces using various 2D shapes and then connected it to math and recording the number of shapes we used and creating a graph based on it.

Have a wonderful long weekend and see everyone back at school on Tuesday morning.

October 4th - 7th

Hello Room 5 students and parents! The first full week of October has flown by and we are heading into the long Thanksgiving weekend. The students spent part of the week discussing and writing about the many thing that we have in our lives that we are thankful for and the list was long! We all realized how grateful we are to live in a country where our quality of life is very high compared to so many other places in the world.

In Mathematics, students are reviewing increasing patterns and writing specific pattern rules to match up with the pattern they are being asked to create themselves. Students have also been looking at representing numbers with 3 digits and soon will be looking at numbers that go above 1000.

In Social Studies, we continue to explore the land and climates of the various countries we study. We have discussed how land can greatly effect people's quality of life and whether the land is suitable for people to meet their needs.

In Science, we have explored birds, fish, insects and amphibious types of animals in our studies of animal life cycle. Each category of animals have various types of body parts that allow them to move, swim and breathe in their respective environments. Students recently learned that insects or invertebrates make up almost 95 percent of the total animals found on Earth!

In Reading, students have started to work in their small guided reading groups doing a variety of literacy activities throughout the week. The students are being asked to explain how they decode unfamiliar words they find in the stories they read and also what reading strategies great readers use to understand the various elements found in the stories being read.

Again, there is no school on Monday, but I hope that you are able to spend some quality time together with family and look forward to hearing all the wonderful stories from the students about their weekends!  Happy Thanksgiving!

September 27th - October 1st

Hello Room 5! Hard to believe we are already into the month of October!

This week in math, we have been learning how to write and draw numbers into the hundreds. We have also touched on increasing patterns and writing out a specific pattern rule to explain what others are to do in order to make the pattern.

In Science, we continue to classify animals into groups and learning about characteristics such as body covering, how they breath, habitats and if they are warm or cold blooded. We also looked at the life cycles of chickens (for birds) and rabbits (for mammals).

In writing we are wrote out what we had learned about Terry Fox and his influence in Canadian society for all that he has done to aid cancer research.

As this week recognized both Orange Shirt Day and the Truth and Reconciliation Day on Thursday, the grade three classes put together our first (virtual) assembly. If you haven't had a chance to see it parents, please check out the amazing job the grade threes did!

In Social Studies, we have been exploring landforms and names of bodies of water as well as start to look at the various regions that make up the countries we are studying, starting with the country of Peru. Students have been discussing how the land and water sources that make up the country can effect their quality of life in many ways.

In Art, we have been evaluating Indigenous art and the feelings we have when we look at a piece of art. Students were introduced into what the foreground and background is and what shapes and patterns we might see in a piece of artwork.

Next week, there is no school on Friday as it is a Professional Development day and remember to come dressed in your formal uniform for Monday morning! Enjoy what looks like a beautiful Sunday and see you Monday!

Week 4 of Grade 3

Hi there! I hope you are having a fabulous fall weekend with your family. Hard to believe that next Friday marks the beginning of October already!

This week the students took part in the Terry Fox Run on Thursday and ran or walked consecutively for about half an hour around the school playground area. Thank you to all those families who were able to bring in a donation that goes directly to the Terry Fox Foundation and their goal of finding a cure for cancer.

In writing, we continue to explore the elements of a complete sentence and what a noun, verb, adjective are within the sentence. We are looking to extend and add greater description to our sentences in order to help our reader create a clear picture in their mind of what the students are writing about. We also have discussed the importance of starting our sentences with capital letters and also using appropriate punctuation to end our sentences, either a period, exclamation mark or question mark.

In Mathematics, the students continue to work on number sense and being able to represent numbers using expanded notation, base ten blocks and place value charts. The students have also been exploring various strategies they can use in order to find the sum in addition questions and the differences in a subtraction sentence.

In Social Studies, we were fortunate enough to bring in Teacher's Pet to provide us with a glimpse into the four countries that we will be studying this year - India, Tunisia, Peru and Ukraine. A big thank you to our parent volunteers who helped as "teacher" while introducing each student to the country they were teaching about. The students came away with a new found appreciation of how many differences there are with people in different countries in the world, but also how many similarities there are too.

In Science, we are looking at various classifications of animals and what characteristics each animal has to fit into their category. We looked at skin cover, whether they are vertebrates or invertebrates, habitats, number of legs, warm blooded and cold blooded and examples of each. We will be looking more in depth at each type of animal and creating detailed diagrams of each.

A reminder that we have Picture Day on Monday and the students need to be in their formal uniforms and also that we will be recognizing Orange Shirt Day on Wednesday where we are asking the students to wear an orange shirt to school.  Thursday there is no school in recognition of Truth and Reconciliation Day.  Enjoy the rest of your weekend and I will see the students on Monday morning.

Week 3 of Grade 3

Hello Room 5 and thank you for another wonderful week of learning. The class has been busy with many different subject areas and getting comfortable in our new room and hallway for grade 3! The students have been busy discussing the theme of quality of life for people around the world and how it can affect their feeling of safety and comfort levels. We have been exploring the concepts of wants versus needs in our daily life and we will exploring the lives of others in countries like Peru,  India, Ukraine and also Tunisia and how do our country compare with these places in meeting our needs.

In Mathematics, we are discussing place value and various ways to represent numbers using expanded notation, base ten blocks, place value charts and creating addition and subtraction sentences as well. The students continue to explore various types of graphs such as bar and pictographs to gain an understanding of what the graphs can tell us in relation to information.

In Literacy, we continue to discuss making Just Right choices with the books we choose to read and how to get the most out of these books by asking ourselves questions as we read.  The students have also been exploring the idea of where writers get their ideas from and using our own individual Brain Pockets for those ideas. The Brain Pocket includes the Memory Pocket, the Fact Pocket and the Imagination Pocket. We are also looking into what make a complete sentence and starting to use Triple Scoop words within our writing to make it more dynamic and appealing to the reader.

Next week, we have Teacher's Pet coming to our classroom on Wednesday to do an introduction to the various countries we are exploring in Social Studies. Thank you to the parents who were able to take time from their busy schedules and volunteer to help with this program. This week, we will also be doing our Terry Fox run on Thursday as a whole school. Students are welcome to donate a Toonie for Terry over the week and I believe that there was a link sent out by Mrs. Taylor if you would like to donate a larger amount through the Terry Fox website. Also, our Physical Education program will be run outside for the time being, so please ensure your child have appropriate clothing to be outside during this time and as the days are becoming cooler, they are prepared to be outside for our daily recess and lunch breaks. Another reminder that there is no school for the students on Friday, September 24th.

Below is some information regarding our school's involvement with Chapters and donating proceeds to Le Roi Daniels to help us purchase more books for our school's Learning Commons. Please take the time to explore the information and know that it helps to support our theme of Love of Reading within our school community. Have a wonderful Sunday and see everyone in their formal uniforms tomorrow morning!

Week 2 of School

Hello room 5! Thank you to all the parents who were able to join me for the Google Meet yesterday night as we outlined to plan for this year of Grade 3. Although the week was short, the students were busy reviewing classroom expectations, science sketching, math concept reviews from grade 2 and lots of creative art activities. The students took turns realizing their own uniqueness and strengths they bring into the classroom each and every day.

In Reading, we have discussed making good choices in the materials we choose to read in the classroom and during our visits to the library. We want to be able to chose based on our interests and also ensure the book is at the right level for us to be able to understand. The classroom is full of book, both fiction and non-fiction options at various levels for the students to choose from.

In writing, we had a chance to review one of the areas in our Brain Pockets - our memory pocket. We shared some of our own memories and brainstormed some more that we could write about in the future. Each student was then asked to use their 6 senses to write about a specific memory they have from the summer. After writing, we discussed the importance of using your choice of words within your writing to create a clear "picture" for your writer. That is the job of the writer each and every time.

In Math, we have been reviewing basic addition and subtraction facts as well as looking at what graphs are used for. The students shared their birthday months and created both bar graphs and also line plot graphs. We will continue to explore patterns and also representing numbers in a variety of ways.

Looking towards next week, a reminder that homework will be posted on Sunday on my blog and will be due on Friday, September 17th. Also, students need to be in their formal uniforms on Monday. Thank you again room 5 for a wonderful week of learning and see you Monday morning.

Meet the Teacher presentation

Hello parents of Room 5! It was great to see so many familiar faces and some new ones too on the Google Meet today. If you click here, you can see the Powerpoint presentation from tonight.  Thanks!

Welcome to a New School Year!

Hello to all the parents of room 5! I was excited to see many faces that I knew well when I met with the students on Wednesday this week for the first day of school. I also want to welcome the new additions to the grade three class this year and I am looking forward to a fantastic year of learning and experiences together!

The grade three school year is now at least three days old! We still have to keep in place some of the masking and sanitizing measures that we had in place last year to keep everyone safe and healthy, but the students were pros when it came to remembering the expectations. Please remember to send your child with at least two masks in case one breaks or gets lost throughout the day.

We have started the school year by reviewing some of the 3 R's we talked about last year as parts of the recipe towards making the most of our school days - Respect for ourselves, others and our environment, being responsible students and also reflecting on our work and saying to ourselves, how can I make it better next time? We also introduced the 1 "K" - Kindness towards others in our classroom and throughout the school and 1 "C" - Caring for ourselves and those around us.

This week we have renewed acquaintances with many of the students that were in the grade 2 classroom last year with me and tried our best to make the new students feel welcomed and know that they are a big part of our class too! All the students were given their own rock, which like themselves, are unique and different, but still have some similarities and connections to each other. Each student has many talents and strengths and we will be working hard to also help each other reach our personal and academic goals along the way.

A quick reminder that school will return on Tuesday, September 7th and that we will be having our virtual Classroom informational meeting on Thursday night at 6:30. I look forward to reconnecting with many of the parents that night and also introducing myself and the TLC program to those who are new. Enjoy the rest of your long weekend and see everyone bright and early on Tuesday morning!

New Math Website to Check out!

Hi there! Mrs. Hull has shared this website with the teachers and it is called Which One Doesn't Belong?. You can click HERE to find the link. There are different categories and you can try and figure out which shape, number or letter doesn't belong in the group of four and explain your reason why it doesn't belong to someone at home. Good luck! Some of them are very tricky!

Online Schedule and Activities for May 17th to 20th

Hello Room 17 and welcome back for the second week of online learning. The schedule and activities can be found HERE. Just a reminder that Friday is a Professional Development Day and there will be no online learning activities scheduled for this day.  Enjoy the beautiful weather today and see you on Google Meet at 8:30am Monday!

Online learning Week at a Glance and Activities

Hello room 17, grade two's! Found HERE is the download of the online learning schedule and activities for the week. I also posted on the HOMEWORK page this week's homework as well. Any online learning should be dated and completed in the journal or duotang that I sent home on Thursday last week. Any homework can be finished and completed in their homework books.  Thank you and see you tomorrow morning at 8:30!

Weekly Blog

Hello Room 17! Thanks to almost all the students in a seamless move to online learning today! It was great to see your faces and review what is going to be happening for the next couple of weeks as we switch back to online learning. I will be posting the weekly schedule and activities for everyone on Sunday and also there is the expectation that the students will be doing their homework as well that will be due once we get back to the classroom for the two weeks!

It has been a busy week as we prepared to transition back onto online learning and the students were busy doing a picture prompt and remembering the steps involved in creating a strong climbing story with a great beginning, detailed attempts to solve the problem, a solution to the problem and followed up by a satisfying ending where the characters think about what to do differently next time so their kites don't get stuck in the tree!

In Mathematics, we have been discussing how to interpret and properly complete a word problem using pictures, numbers and words in order to show your understanding. This has been complimented with work on measuring the length of various objects in the classroom and being able to compare which one is longer or shorter when put side by side.

In Science, we started to transition to our next unit on Boats and Buoyancy and how objects are either able to float or sink beneath the water's surface based on density, shape and what type of material they are made from.

In Social Studies, we continued to explore Calgary and its past as well as try to create a persuasive letter to our parents about if we had to move to one of the three other communities we study, which one would you pick and why.  It was interesting to see that even though it is a very cold community in the winter time, some students still chose to pick Iqaluit in the Nunavut!

So, we return to online learning and we will do our best to continue to move our learning forward as this strange year of grade 2 continues. I want to remind students about the importance of being a respectful and appropriate individual while we are meeting in Google Meet. As we had to move online in January, students in room 17 did a fabulous job of knowing when we can turn on our mikes and when it was time to listen to either the teacher or another student in the class. I hope we can continue this trend and remember that everyone is important, but we need to share our time online equally. I hope you have a fabulous Mother's Day weekend and look forward to reconnecting with all of you on Monday morning at 8:30!

Weekend Art Homework

Hello Room 17! I look forward to seeing you tomorrow morning for our Google Meet session at 8:30 am!

As we have been talking about analyzing art and artists, I am asking you to look at the following picture and spend some time this weekend trying to answer the following questions about this painting in your online work journals I sent home with you today.

The Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh, 1889

Here are the questions I would like you to try and answer about this particular artist?

1) What is the title of the picture? Who painted it?

2) What do you notice in the foreground or the picture? What do you notice in the background?

3) What shapes do you see in the painting?

4) what types of objects appear in the picture?

5) How do you feel when you first look at the picture?

6) If you could change something about this picture, what would you change?

April 26th - 30th

Happy Saturday to all the students of room 17! I hope you are having a wonderful weekend and are able to get out as a family for a walk or fresh air.

In Writing, we continue to work on building on our climbing story skills and understanding what elements will appeal to our reader and add them into our stories. We talk about stretching out details, adding some suspense and then starting to attempt to solve the problem a few times before being successful. The students have continue to key in our our idea of a kite getting stuck in a tree and how are we going to get it out?

In Mathematics, we continue to reinforce our number sense skills in adding and subtracting two digit numbers and being able to explain how we found our answers. We have also been looking at word problems to figure out what the problem is asking us to do and the steps we need to complete in order to find the answer or answers. We have also looked at using nonstandard ways to measure things inside the classroom and also outside as we measure the perimeter of our playground with our feet. It was amazing to see that for most students, it took over 360 feet to go all the way around!

In Science, we are wrapping up our unit on Exploring Liquids and are starting to look at Boats and Buoyancy. We will examine what materials float or sink and how boats are designed in order to move across the water.

In Social Studies, we have begun to research about Calgary and its past. As a class, we generated some questions we wanted to answer about Calgary's past and growth as a city. We will then be taking this information and create a Google Slide presentation to share our findings with our classmates.

A reminder that Monday is Formal uniform day and students should have at least two masks that they can wear at school with them. I continue to stress with the students the importance of wearing their masks properly in class and when we leave the classroom too to attend other events. Finally, as our PE classes will be outside for the next while, please ensure your child has the proper layers to be outside during this time. Thank you and see you soon!

April 19th - 23rd

Greetings Room 17 students. Another busy week of learning and thank you for all that you do each week in trying to move your own learning forward during this grade two year!

In Writing, we continue to add elements to our climbing stories by using a great beginning and then adding some detail about the critical object (this week the kite stuck in the tree), we will then look back at our comic strip story plans and begin to add the problem and attempts to solve the problem. We keep talking about the importance of adding more details to help create a vivid picture for our readers. Without it, the reader is confused, bored and unsure of what is happening in the story. This is why we write our stories in parts so that each part reflects our best efforts.

In Mathematics, we continue to work with Mrs. Hull on problem solving and various interactive games to work on number sense, including being able to represent a mystery number with numbers in the hundreds, tens and ones places. Also we continue to explore various ways to represent information in picture or bar graphs and what kind of information we can get from each graph including title, most or least popular choice, how many people were asked altogether as well.

In Science, we took on the Paper Cup Challenge to see which type of paper would be waterproof and which would absorb the most water that we poured into our cups.  The students then took that knowledge and thought if they had to make a waterproof raincoat, which material would they use. (Hint: wax paper and aluminum foil were the clear choices!)

In Art, the students have been busy with a number of art projects including trying their hand at pointillism painting similar to Georges Seurat as well as a beautiful piece for an upcoming special day that they have been working tirelessly on completing.

A reminder that there is no school on Monday as Teachers are in school learning some new teaching techniques during our Professional Development day and I look forward to seeing everyone bright and early on Tuesday morning! Enjoy the rest of your long weekend!

April 12th - 16th

Hello everybody,

It has been a busy week and the students continue to work hard as we begin the last few months of the school year. As a class, we had a discussion about remembering to give our best effort each and every day when learning in the classroom. I stressed with the students the importance of working on our printing, listening carefully in class and also remembering that if we all talk at the same time during instructions or discussions, nobody is able to be heard!

In Writing, we are now starting to explore the second part of climbing stories with a focus on the middle parts of the story. We are exploring how to add more details to our main characters (what are they like), our setting (the places where our story takes place) and also if there is a critical object that needs to be introduced into the story. We will also explore the problem of our story and how we will attempt to solve the problem. This week and next week, we are focusing on a kite that gets stuck in a tree and how we will try to get it out of the tree. The students started with a planning comic strip that we will take ideas from and create a story line from.

In Mathematics, we have started to work with Mrs. Hull at various math centres in the classroom twice a week. We focus on problem solving and various number sense activities to have students interact and also use math talk while working on the various centres. Beyond this we continue to look at graphing questions and various measurement tools we can use to describe everyday objects.

In Science, we had a Liquid Race Challenge where we took various liquids and "raced" them down a lid to see which one flowed the quickest or slowest. We talked about viscosity and how that can effect how quickly or slowly a liquid would be able to pour from its container.

In Social Studies, we have started to explore our own pasts and created a timeline of the significant events in our lives. We also came up with a list of questions we have about Calgary and its past and also what types of resources we could use to learn more about our city's past history.

I hope you stay warm and dry on this snowy Sunday and look forward to seeing everyone in their formal uniforms on Monday.

April 6th - 9th

Welcome back to room 17 after what I hoped was a fun and relaxing spring break time. It was great to see everybody again and continue forward on our grade two learning journey.

This week in writing, we spent some time reviewing the elements of a great beginning and then started to talk about the various elements that make up the middle of the story. We talked about introducing the characters, the problem and adding as many details and descriptors as possible to create a vivid picture for the reader who wants to continue reading on.

In Mathematics, we reviewed our basic facts and had some math talk sessions with Mrs. Hull in relation to figuring our two digit numbers based on the clues that were given and also how to access her website that has many links to some great math websites. (Her blog page is found on my resources page, but near the bottom).

In Science, we had the opportunity to look at various liquids and how because of their different densities, they don't mix when placed in the same container. We found cooking oil had the lowest density, while corn syrup, which was at the bottom, had the highest density of all the liquids. We also talked about how oil sits on the surface of the water when an oil tanker leaks and the process of trying to contain the oil from spreading too far and harming the sea life near the spill.

In Social Studies, the students had to look at life from the perspective of an Inuit child growing up in Iqaluit. The students were asked to think of how their life is shaped at school and with the interactions of people within their own families too.  It was interesting to hear how each student saw themselves when asked to write about life in this northern community.

Have a wonderful Sunday and see everyone on Monday morning for another wonderful week of learning!

March 15th - 19th

Wow! Hard to believe it is only one week until Spring Break and the season of spring has just begun. A reminder that Monday is formal uniforms and please ensure you are wearing the proper attire for each day.

In Writing, we continue to practice Great Beginnings and being able to use a variety of ways to start off our climbing stories. We are also trying to avoid using "said" too much in our dialogue beginnings and using a number of other ways to express our character's feelings when speaking out loud. After spring break, we will begin to explore the middle parts of our stories, where we add in the problem and at least two attempts to solve the problem before finally solving the problem our main character may be having.

In Math, we continue to explore number sense and taking a word problem and deciding what type of operation we need to use in order to solve the problem. For the word problems, we talk about drawing a picture, using a number sentence and then going back to the question in the word problem and using it to guide how we write our word sentences to answer the question.

In Science, we have been talking about waterproofing materials and what would make the best tool to waterproof a piece of paper (we decided wax crayons are the best of the bunch). We also talked about the use of nylon, rubber and Gortex in order to repel water in either jackets or umbrellas when out in the rain.

In Social Studies, we explored the upcoming Ukrainian holiday of Easter and how they create pysanky eggs to celebrate this important event for Ukrainian people. Each egg is usually hand crafted and contain a number of symbols draw on with wax that is applied to the eggs. We have discussed the importance of keeping cultural aspects and traditions alive for future generations to know their family's background.

I hope you have a wonderful second day of Spring today and I look forward to seeing everyone tomorrow for our last week of classes!

March 8th - 11th

Hello room 17 students and parents!

A big thank you to all the parents I was able to connect with during the Parent Teacher Interviews this past Thursday night and Friday. I am sorry we were not able to have our usual Student Led Conferences, but I hope the opportunity to chat about your child was meaningful and allowed you a clear picture of how your child in progressing in the grade 2 classroom.

This week, we have started to focus on Great Beginnings in introducing our latest writing project - climbing stories. Students have been introduced into the various types of Great Beginnings and had a chance to practice them with various themes over the week. Great Beginnings include: Action, Dialogue, A Thought or Question by the main character or the use of a Sound Effect to start off the story. The goal is to try and invite the reader in to want to read on and find out what will happen next.

In Mathematics, we continue to explore numbers and also graphing various questions asked to the class. We continue to try various ways to answer a subtraction or addition question in order to find the strategy that works for each individual student.

In Science, we have looked at using our 5 senses in observing water and its properties. We will be exploring other liquids and how their properties may be different from water.

In Social Studies, we have begun to explore the stories of the past in each Canadian community and the importance of keeping these stories alive from generation to generation. The students heard various animal themed stories of how a raven got his black feathers and also about a horse in Meteghan that is visited by elves who help to restore the energy of the horse.

As we move into the last few weeks before the Spring Break, please remember the students need to be in formal uniforms on Monday and also that Wednesday is a casual day and students can wear green to celebrate St. Patrick's Day.  I hope you enjoy a wonderful Sunday and see all of you next week!

First Week of March

 Happy Sunday to all!

I hope you were able to get outside with your family and enjoy some fresh air and beautiful weather this weekend!

This past week was busy as the students were introduced to a new type of story writing that we will be working on called climbing stories. These involve a great beginning, a main character, a problems, attempts to solve the problem and then a solution to the problem. This type of story requires a lot of details to help the reader to create a clear picture in their heads.   We will be examining the use of great beginnings as a way to invite our readers in to read the rest of our story!

In Math, we continue to look at various ways to add and subtract 2 digit numbers. We also have exploring 2D shapes and how they help to form the faces of 3D objects in our everyday lives.

In Science, we have moved on to our new unit on Exploring Liquids. We have had the chance to discuss and explore a very important liquid in our lives called water and its various properties.   We will continue to explore other liquids and how fast or slow they pour and how liquids have many similar and different properties in relation to other ones.

In Social Studies, we have begun to talk about how the past people have helped to shape the various Canadian communities of today. We talk about the importance of story and folktales in continuing the culture of the Inuit, the Acadians and the Ukrainian communities.   We will continue to explore the role that the past has played for each place, including Calgary too.

I hope you enjoy the rest of your Sunday and look forward to seeing everyone next Monday in their formal uniforms!

Last week of February 2021

Hello Room 17! I hope you are able to get outside this weekend and have some fun and time with your families.

It has been a full week with the students putting their finishing touches on their How to instructional posters and they look amazing! The students made sure to add in a bold title, a list of materials, the steps to use with pictures and finally a tip on how to make the product or experience better. As we move in to next week, the students will be doing a final instructional piece on the steps they take before getting ready for bed.

In Mathematics, we continue to explore adding and subtracting of two digit numbers, with and without regrouping or borrowing. Most students have found a strategy or two that works for them in finding the correct sum or difference and can explain how they got their answers. We have also explored bar graphs and answering questions about the graph and representing numbers in many ways.

In Science, we are wrapping up our unit on Hot and Cold Temperatures and the students had a chance to test out their insulating devices in class on Friday. They were all given an ice cube which they placed in their devices and most were very successful in choosing materials that would help the ice cube from melting. Our next unit will be exploring Liquids.

In Social Studies, we have looked at the culture of the Ukrainians in Saskatoon, the Inuit of Iqaluit and now, the Acadians of Meteghan. Each community has a unique flavour with different languages, music, dance, foods and clothing. We will also be exploring their folktales and stories that make up their past and are shared with future generations

Hope you enjoy your Sunday. A reminder that Monday is formal uniforms and please ensure your child has appropriate gym shoes that can be used for Physical Education indoors.

February 16th - 19th

Another busy week of February has flown by and we have only one more week left in February of 2021!

The students have been working hard on completing their "How to..." posters in writing to include a bold title, a list of materials needed and the steps needed in order to complete the task or skill the students are teaching to others.

In Math, we have been continuing to work on Magic Numbers, bar graphs and estimating length of several classroom items including our desks. Students have also been practicing their adding and subtracting skills playing Race to 100 or Race to 0 for subtraction practice.

In Science, we are continuing to look at Hot and Cold Temperatures and next week's homework focuses on design a container to insulate an ice cube and keep it from melting. We have explored various materials that help to keep things warm and now the students will figure out the best materials to use to keep something cold for an extended period of time.

In Social Studies, we have keyed in on the cultural contributions of the Inuit people in Iqaluit and the ways they continue to keep their cultural traditions alive and passed on to future generations. We will next be exploring the role of the Acadian people in Meteghan, Nova Scotia.

I hope you have had a wonderful weekend and see you tomorrow in formal uniforms. Also a reminder that Wednesday is Pink Shirt Day if you would like to participate.

February 8th - 10th

Happy Valentine's Day to one and all! I hope you are having a wonderful long weekend with family and trying to stay warm with this bitterly cold weather we have been experiencing. It was quite a challenge last week for the students are Monday through to Wednesday they were unable to go outside with the temperatures and windchill being what they were!

As it was a short week, the students still worked really well! They enjoyed the opportunity on Wednesday to exchange Valentine's cards with their classmates and I want to offer a great big thanks to all of the students who took the time to make me a Valentine card as well!

In Writing, the students were busy completing their Recipes for Kindness in relation to our virtues of kindness and caring for others. They had to include ingredients for their recipe and how best to create kindness to give to others. They finished their good copies on the computers using Google documents where they could add pictures too.

In Mathematics, we continue to explore double digit addition and subtraction using the games Race to 100 or Race to 0 for subtraction practice. We have explored how you can use a hundreds charts to help you figure out a question once you determine how many tens and ones you are adding or needing to take away from a number. Also, we continue to explore the use of picture and bar graphs to explain the data that we have collected from questions asked of the class.

In Social Studies, we have looked at a definition of culture and how it influences the communities we are studying. This week, we looked at the influence of the Ukrainian culture in Saskatoon and the different language, foods, clothing, dance, music, folktales and art ensure their historical culture continues to be practiced by both young and old people.

In Science, we have touched on various materials and if they make good insulators to keep things hot. After next week's homework, the following week's homework will include an at home project where the students will need to design and construct a device to keep an ice cube as cold as possible over the day. We have talked about the need to design it using a material that will help to insulate the ice cube and keep it from getting too warm, too quickly.

Remember that Monday is the Family Day holiday and we will see each other again on Tuesday. Another reminder that as we are doing our Physical Education inside, the students need to have proper gym shoes to use. There are some students who have multi purpose black shoes, but there are still some students who are wearing dress shoes that are unsafe for use in the gym. Please ensure your child has the proper footwear to allow them to safely participate in the gym activities.

Thank you and enjoy the rest of your long weekend and see everybody on Tuesday morning!

February 1st - 5th

Hello Room 17 class!  It is great to be back in the classroom and seeing everyone in person. We had a chance to welcome back one student from the HUB class who has rejoined us in the classroom. Everyone was very welcoming to her and made sure she felt included in the classroom activities this week.

In Writing, we have focused on making a Recipe of Kindness that we have created from scratch. In our recipes, we are making sure to include our list of ingredients and all the steps involved in giving and sharing our kindness ideas with others. The students are in the process of typing up their good copies of their recipes in their Google Drive documents.

In Math, we have continued to explore 2 digit addition and subtraction and the various strategies we can use in order to show our understandings of the process of these two operations. Students also continued to show their understanding of representing a number like 100 in many different ways from number sentences to skip counting.  We continue to also build picture and bar graphs as ways to display the information we have collected from our class.

In Science, we are looking at Hot and Cold temperatures and exploring how we can heat not only our houses, but how our school is heated with its boiler.  We also looked at how long it takes to melt snow in the classroom and the effect of wind on the outside temperature as our week at school has been very cold!

In Social Studies, we continue to explore the community of Saskatoon and the role that the Ukrainian people and their culture has had when they moved to Canada to settle and farm in and around Saskatoon. They brought language, dance, food, music and their songs and stories along with them to share with others to make sure that their culture and traditions are not lost to younger generations.

Next week, there will be no homework as it is a very short week with Teacher's Convention on Thursday and Friday and Family Day the following Monday. We will be handing out the Valentine's cards that many students brought in this week next Wednesday and then the students can look forward to a very long weekend moving forward! Have a great weekend, stay warm and see you in your formal uniforms next Monday!

I am hoping this may eliminate some of the problems we had today. For French, the students will need to log off at 1:00 and then log back on exactly at 1:10 and then they will have their French lesson taught by Mr. Jamroziak.  Have a great evening and see you bright and early at 8 am tomorrow. I told the students they could dress wearing their favourite colour.

Hello Room 17! Tuesday we will be back to online learning starting at 8:00 am. The schedule and information about the day's activities and lessons will be posted HERE as it was previously for the students during the first week back in January. I will be updating the schedule and activities on a daily basis from Tuesday, January 19th until Thursday, January 28th.

Please make sure your child has a quiet area to work in and I have sent home their magic number books for math, Writing books, Science and Social Studies books to work from. If need be, please ensure they have another booklet or paper they can use for additional math activities we will be doing over the next two weeks or if you can print off any necessary pages that I add to the daily activities.

Thank you and we can get through this together. Go Room 17!👍

 Thank you!

Room 17 thank you very much for your efforts this week with our online learning! As I said to you before we signed off, you did an excellent job being respectful digital citizens within our Google Meet sessions. You made sure to mute your mikes when others were talking and to be patient when others were sharing their writing or ideas. During the presenting time or teacher instructional time, you listened and asked your questions at the end when it was appropriate to do so.

We will be returning to in class instruction next Monday. I want to remind you to wear your formal uniforms, bring two masks to school and return all your writing, math and science activities you did this week during online teaching to the classroom. I hope you have a wonderful weekend and I look forward to seeing all of your Monday morning!

A last note: if you are interested in finishing up the Snowman math activity, I have included the document HERE and you are welcome to print it off and finish your snowman and the math question about what your snowman costs to build.

 IMPORTANT REMINDERS:

Hello and Happy New Year to all of you! I hope you all had a wonderful winter break and are ready to get back into the swing of school work. However, for this first week, rather than meeting in person, we will be meeting via Google Meet starting Tuesday morning at 8:00am! Remember our Google Meet code and I will be posting the week's schedule HERE for you to see how each day's schedule is set up.  Please remember to be on time tomorrow morning and please do not enter the Google Meet early. Finally, please mute your microphones once you log on to the session in the morning!
