February 8th - 10th

Happy Valentine's Day to one and all! I hope you are having a wonderful long weekend with family and trying to stay warm with this bitterly cold weather we have been experiencing. It was quite a challenge last week for the students are Monday through to Wednesday they were unable to go outside with the temperatures and windchill being what they were!

As it was a short week, the students still worked really well! They enjoyed the opportunity on Wednesday to exchange Valentine's cards with their classmates and I want to offer a great big thanks to all of the students who took the time to make me a Valentine card as well!

In Writing, the students were busy completing their Recipes for Kindness in relation to our virtues of kindness and caring for others. They had to include ingredients for their recipe and how best to create kindness to give to others. They finished their good copies on the computers using Google documents where they could add pictures too.

In Mathematics, we continue to explore double digit addition and subtraction using the games Race to 100 or Race to 0 for subtraction practice. We have explored how you can use a hundreds charts to help you figure out a question once you determine how many tens and ones you are adding or needing to take away from a number. Also, we continue to explore the use of picture and bar graphs to explain the data that we have collected from questions asked of the class.

In Social Studies, we have looked at a definition of culture and how it influences the communities we are studying. This week, we looked at the influence of the Ukrainian culture in Saskatoon and the different language, foods, clothing, dance, music, folktales and art ensure their historical culture continues to be practiced by both young and old people.

In Science, we have touched on various materials and if they make good insulators to keep things hot. After next week's homework, the following week's homework will include an at home project where the students will need to design and construct a device to keep an ice cube as cold as possible over the day. We have talked about the need to design it using a material that will help to insulate the ice cube and keep it from getting too warm, too quickly.

Remember that Monday is the Family Day holiday and we will see each other again on Tuesday. Another reminder that as we are doing our Physical Education inside, the students need to have proper gym shoes to use. There are some students who have multi purpose black shoes, but there are still some students who are wearing dress shoes that are unsafe for use in the gym. Please ensure your child has the proper footwear to allow them to safely participate in the gym activities.

Thank you and enjoy the rest of your long weekend and see everybody on Tuesday morning!
